English Placement Test (Beykoz-PLET)

English Placement Test (Beykoz-PLET)

The Aim of the Test:

English Placement Test (Beykoz-PLET) is held for students to be studying in the English Preparatory Program compulsorily and/or on demand who have recently enrolled in Beykoz University and those who have suspended their registration and want to return. The aim of Beykoz-PLET is to identify

• students’ foreign language (English) levels and

• whether students will be eligible to take English Proficiency Test (Beykoz-PROF) held after Beykoz-PLET test which they must take in order to be successful in (exempt from) the English Preparatory Program.

The Date, Place and Time of the Test:

When students enroll in the university for the first time, they are given a document which includes the information about the date, place and time of the test by the Directorate of University Student Affairs Office. Students are expected to act according to the information in the document given to them.

The Content and Duration of the Test:

Beykoz-PLET Test consists of a total of 4 (four) sections, including 60 (sixty) multiple choice questions prepared to assess students' vocabulary, grammar, reading skills and a writing section in which a paragraph will be written about one of the topics students will choose.

The test lasts approximately 2 (two) hours and there is no break during the exam.

Because one correct answer will be deducted for every 4 (four) incorrect answers, students to take this exam are advised not to answer any questions that they are not sure of.

Levels According to Beykoz-PLET Results:

Students who achieve a net score of 30 in the section of 60 (sixty) multiple choice questions in this exam will be eligible to take Beykoz-PROF Test.

If the number of correct answers is at the limit, "writing" section assessment will be the determining factor. (For example, if a student who achieve a net of 28-29 in the section of multiple choice questions get B1 or above in the writing section, s/he will be eligible to take Beykoz-PROF Test.) In order for the levels to be determined appropriately, it is important for students to answer the writing section question.

Announcement of Test Results and Being Successful in the Test:

Students who achieve a net score of 30 and above out of 60 multiple choice questions asked in this exam will be considered “successful “in Beykoz-PLET Test and will be eligible to take English Proficiency (Beykoz-PROF) Test held after this exam.

Examination Rules:

In the examination process, it is obligatory to follow the below mentioned rules, the instructions on the covers of the test booklets and those given by the exam invigilators. The students who do not follow the instructions given and those who cheat, attempt to cheat or aid others in cheating during the examination will be penalized and their exams will be deemed invalid.

Before the exam, students are required to

  • be present at the examination places 15 minutes before the exam with their Exam Entry Document on which their exam room and seat numbers are written (this document is not required for Additional Placement and DGS students enrolled at a different time other than normal registration dates),
  • bring relevant equipment for the exam (pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener) with them,
  • come to exam with their “Student ID Cards” given to them during registration (if they have not been given a card, with their national ID card/passport) and show this card to the invigilator for ID check while entering the exam room,
  • sit in their assigned seats after their IDs are checked by the invigilators,
  • turn off their mobile phones completely before the test starts and hand them in to the invigilator as they are not allowed to have their mobile phones with them in the examination room,
  • sign the exam signature list (the exams of those students whose signatures are missing in the list will be deemed invalid),
  • follow the instructions of the exam invigilators and carefully fill in the required information (such as student's name, student ID number and question booklet type) on the "optic form" and "exam question booklet" to be distributed to them (missing information on the optic form and the question booklet and the problems that will arise from mis-marking will cause the test to be invalid, so the required information and especially the question booklet type (A or B) should be written correctly),
  • check the page numbers without opening the booklet completely when they are given the question booklet,
  • keep the cover of the question booklet closed until the command to start the exam and during their waiting time.

After the command to start the exam, it is forbidden to ask a question to the invigilator or any others. It is obligatory to listen carefully to the warnings given by the exam invigilators before the exam. Students who do not follow the examination rules throughout the course of the exam will not be warned again and their exams will be deemed invalid.

The Placement Test lasts approximately 2 (two) hours. During this time, students will not be allowed to leave the exam room and come back again for any reason (such as smoking, using the bathroom, etc.). For this reason, it is advised for students to meet all their needs before the exam begins.

During the exam, students are required

  • to mark their answers to the exam questions on the "optic form" within the time allocated to them,
  • not to share pencils, erasers, etc. throughout the course of the exam.

At the end of the exam, students need to make sure if

  • they leave their pens and then stop writing on their optic forms when it is announced that the test is over,
  • they hand in their optic forms and question booklets without anything missing to the exam invigilators,
  • they have signed the exam signature list, and
  • they have taken their mobile phones while leaving the exam room.
