Project Oriented Learning and Research Approach at Bachelor Level

Beykoz University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture has adopted the bachelor level research and development policy in order to encourage students to develop research and development at the undergraduate level. It has adopted the Project Based Learning (PBL) approach in order to enable students to learn better, both as an implementation tool of this policy and by learning. It is also aimed to develop the student's interests through Project Oriented Learning.

The Project-Oriented Learning has been put into practice at the programs of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture as of 2019-2020 academic year.

The transition of the architectural program to project-oriented learning was easy due to the presence of project-oriented architectural design courses. For this, the project component has been added to many of the courses except architectural design courses.

In engineering programs, a common structure has been created for project-oriented learning. Accordingly, the project component has been added to many of the courses in the curriculum, and an engineering project course is included in the first, second and third grade, all of which are projects. There is also a traditional graduation project course in the final year.

In project-oriented learning, the aim is not to make the project or to output the product, but to provide learning through the project and the project process. In project-oriented learning, the project is not an assignment given to the students and received at the end of the term, but it is a study conducted with the students by going through various steps in a process.

In the Beykoz University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture project-oriented learning model, students work as double triple teams. Prototyping approach is used in project work. In other words, the project teams develop several prototypes throughout the period and reach the final product at the end of the period. Each project requires one or more tools. The tool is usually a software tool, but it can also be a device, etc. Using the vehicle makes it easier to focus on the project and to produce the project outputs, as well as to the students to master the tools they will use later. Several lecturers and research assistants take part in the project course. A research assistant is appointed to each project as a team coach. Teams work by creating dynamic clusters on project subject and vehicle basis. Most of the work is done together in the project meeting room or computer lab. The evaluation takes the form of prototypes and the final product evaluated by the jury. Research assistants also take part in the juries and give evaluation points together with the lecturers. The evaluation of lecturers is more weighted than the research assistants. Student participation, other deliveries other than prototypes are also considered. Project outputs are exhibited at the end of the semester.
